Sustainability of the bivalve communities of Friuli Venezia Giulia: environmental characteristics and productivity.
From the point of view of collective interest and with the objective of collective benefit, this project - which stems from the specific request of a large and representative group of stakeholders in the sector - aims to improve knowledge of the state of the resource and the environmental characteristics that promote the productivity of shellfish, also with the aim of supporting the identification of tools and procedures that can favor the definition and implementation of plans for the protection and sustainable management of the available resources, with particular reference to cockles (Callista chione) and clams (Ruditapes philippinarum).
Therefore, the specific objectives of the project proposal are:
- the mapping, characterization and assessment of the status of cockle (Callista chione) and clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) populations, as well as the characterization of the diet of cockles;
- characterize the physical, chemical, biological, and trophic properties of the sediments and coastal waters of the FVG, including nutrient inputs and areas where cockles are caught;
- historical ecological and socioeconomic framework of fishing activity of the historical evolution of the dynamics of the resource and the state of the environment, integrated analysis of the data and contribution to the basic knowledge needed to develop a resource management plan that promotes fisheries sustainability and species conservation.
