The Centre for Management of Maritime Infrastructures provides services and expertise within the organisation and externally, in the world of applied research and industry, carrying out geophysical and oceanographic exploration and supplying technical management of research vessels and minor vessels.
The Centre brings together scientific and technological skills for the operational management of the research vessel Laura Bassi, owned by OGS, the scientific instrumentation on board and offshore operations on external platforms or special projects. It is active in the preparation, organisation and implementation of national and international research projects in the fields of marine and environmental geology and geophysics, physical, chemical and biological oceanography.
It also manages the coordination of oceanographic campaigns, plans surveys and monitoring, acquires and processes acoustic data, carries out cartographic models and collaborates in the subsequent study and research phase. Missions are carried out in all marine areas of the globe, with particular attention to the Antarctic, the Arctic and the Mediterranean area.
The CGN also coordinates the management and operation of the OGS vessels, the necessary ordinary and extraordinary maintenance, the obtaining of necessary permits to carry out oceanographic campaigns, the management of contracts, the definition of contractual technical specifications, the examination of documents, projects and their critical evaluation, directs the development phases of the maritime engineering process, manages the commissioning from maritime suppliers, performs the quality control of time and cost and the relations with the Shipowners.
The long-standing collaboration with PNRA (National Research Programme in Antarctica) guarantees the implementation of the Ross Sea study activities with the icebreaker Laura Bassi and the cooperation in the logistics of the Italian base Stazione Mario Zucchelli.
