The journal was published under the name Bollettino di Geofisica Teorica e Applicata (Bulletin of Theoretical and Applied Geophysics); its first issue dates back to March 1959, and in 2021 it acquired its current name.

The Bulletin of Geophysics and Oceanography is a quarterly publication and is devoted to publishing original articles dealing with surface geophysics, deep geophysics, well geophysics, exploration geophysics, geodynamics and seismotectonics, seismology, engineering-related seismology, geophysical modelling, geodesy, remote sensing, seismic and geodetic theses, oceanography, and their application in the fields of energy, natural resources, environment and climate, policy and regulation, risk and security, technological development.
