OGS goes for ‘en plein’ at CIESM conference
In Marseille from 28 October to 2 November was held the 40th congress of the Mediterranean Science Commission, or the Commission Internationale pour l'Exploration Scientifique de la Méditerranée (CIESM). During the congress, about 900 participants elected the new Chairpersons of the 6 scientific committees. Miroslav Gacic (section OCE) was re-elected as Chairman of the Committee of Physics and Climate of the Oceans, and Silvia Ceramicola (section GEO) was elected as Chairwoman to lead the Marine Geosciences Committee. In addition, Angelo Camerlenghi (Director GEO) has been appointed to represent the MIUR in the Management Board of the CIESM.
CIESM was founded at the beginning of the last century to promote international research in the Mediterranean Basin and in the Black Sea. The Mediterranean Science Commission integrates a wide range of marine disciplines, which includes geophysical, chemical and biological processes, including high resolution mapping of the seabed. The Commission develops projects and initiatives at the scale of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, such as the monitoring of sites for climate change studies, the promotion of marine reserve areas, the coordination of oceanographic campaigns and the organization of international workshops. CIESM is organized into six scientific committees and led by eight Chairpersons:
C1 – Marine Geosciences: Silvia Ceramicola (OGS, Italy)
C2 - Physics and Climate of the Ocean: Miroslav Gacic (OGS, Italy)
C3 - Marine Biogeochemistry: François Galgani (Ifremer, France)
C4 - Marine Microbiology and Biotechnology: Frank Oliver Glöckner (MPI, Germany)
C5 - Living Resources and Marine Ecosystems: Tamara Shiganova (Ocean, Russia), Salud Deudero (IEO, Spain) e Jamila Ben Souissi (Tunisia)
C6 - Coastal Systems: Yves Henocque (Ifremer, France)
The President of CIESM is Prince Albert II of Monaco and the Director General is Frederic Briand. The headquarters of the Commission are in Monaco, where the Council of 23 member states gathers once a year.
