Natural risks: the activities of the SMILE project “Statistical MachIne Learning for Exposure development” have begun
The kick-off meeting of the SMILE project (“Statistical MachIne Learning for Exposure development") took place yesterday in Milan at the headquarters of the National Research Council (CNR).
SMILE is a project of significant national interest funded by the European Union's National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PNRR) - Next Generation EU. The project is coordinated by the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) and the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies of the National Research Council (CNR-IMATI), the University of Florence and the University of Milan-Bicocca.
The project aims to define a methodology to integrate different types of data, including citizen-collected data and satellite imagery, into a dynamic exposure database. This database can then be used to improve the risk assessment of natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and floods.
During the 2-year project duration, this goal will be achieved by implementing machine learning techniques and testing them in different study areas thanks to the contribution of the different project partners. As part of the project, staff will be recruited to carry out activities with citizens and stakeholders in the study areas.
