OGS is also one of the founding members of the new National Supercomputing Center
The governing bodies of the ICSC Foundation, which will manage one of the five national supercomputing centers envisioned in the National Reconstruction Plan, began their work today, July 19. This marked the establishment of the National Research Center for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing proposed by the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN). Among the 51 founding members spread across the national territory is the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS.
The new National Center will be located in the Technopole of Bologna, promoted by the Emilia-Romagna Region, also thanks to the investments of the Italian Government and the European Innovation Community, which already hosts the European Meteorological Service (ECMWF) Data Center and will soon host the Leonardo supercomputer managed by CINECA and the INFN Computing Center. It will network and systematize the specific knowledge, skills and resources of realities that should have multiple ambitions throughout Italy, with the aim of building a distributed and transversal infrastructure that supports scientific research and the productive world in the innovation and digitization of the village.
The National Center will bring together Italian scientific communities of excellence in 10 different ambitions, will be built on two equally important pillars, infrastructures and thematic areas, and will be organized according to the hub-and-spoke model. The center also foresees the participation of Italian companies to create a synergy between the scientific communities and industry, benefiting both the research and production systems. The Hub will be responsible for validating and managing the research programs whose activities will be developed and carried out by the Spokes and their affiliated companies, also through open ties with research institutions and companies. The National Center will begin operations on September 1. Among the center's first initiatives will be the release of the first calls for PhDs and researchers by 2022, followed by the first open call for other topics in innovation.
