OGS partner in BRITICE-CHRONO

OGS has been invited to join BRITICE-CHRONO, an international project to investigate the stability of marine-influenced ice sheets. The objective is to reconstruct the pattern and timing of collapse of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet, by integrating observations from onshore and offshore glacial landscapes with numerical modeling of ice sheet dynamics (see figure). The 5-year project represents a consortium of over 40 researchers from Britain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, and Italy.

Partnership in BRITICE-CHRONO is linked to ongoing research by OGS into the glacial history of the continental shelf southwest of Ireland in the context of the Italian PNRA project IPY GLAMAR, a collaboration with Irish and British partners. IPY GLAMAR is one of several PNRA projects that reflect OGS research interests in Arctic and sub-Arctic continental margins, building on campaigns of the r/v OGS Explora for the last International Polar Year (2007-2009).
