Summer 2014, Training courses at OGS

Two practical multidisciplinary ship-based training courses for European Graduated and Postgraduated Students of Marine Related Sciences, organized within the Eurofleets programme, will be held in summer 2014.

Multidisciplinary Ship-based training for European graduates and postgraduates students of marine related sciences - 4th - 9th July 2014, Messina- Italy

The practical ship-based training course on board R/V Urania (http://www.eurofleets.eu/np4/87.html) is designed to enable Postgraduates and Graduate Students to acquire the practical skills necessary to conduct offshore multidisciplinary marine science research through the core disciplines of Physical and Chemical Oceanography, Marine Biology and Geosciences.

Training will specifically focus on:

  • Design, planning and execution of scientific surveys;
  • Deployment and operation of equipment and instrumentation;
  • Sample acquisition and processing;
  • Data acquisition, quality control, analysis and integration.

These 6 days courses will comprise four days of multidisciplinary ship-based training, starting and finishing with one shore-based day of RV logistic and survey planning (pre-survey day), data processing, analysis and integration (post-survey day).

Please note that the course is funded through Eurofleets and the National Research Council of Italy, including onboard accommodation and subsistence. Students will pay for travel and  accommodation on land (indications for cheep accommodations will be provided).

 

Practical onboard training course for the PhD students on using new technologies for multidisciplinary oceanographic research - Tallinn, Estonia, August 17th-22nd, 2014

The practical ship-based training course on board R/V Salme (http://www.eurofleets.eu/np4/86.html) is designed to enable PhD Students to acquire advanced practical skills for using new technologies for multidisciplinary oceanographic research (including gliders, autonomous profilers, ferryboxes, and towed instruments).

Training will specifically focus on:

  • Design, planning and execution of scientific surveys;
  • Deployment and operation of autonomous and towed instruments;
  • Data acquisition, quality control, analysis and integration.

These 6 days will include two days of multidisciplinary ship-based training, shore-based training of RV logistic and survey planning, data processing, analysis and integration.

Students will be accommodated in an academic hostel free of charge. Travel expenses to and from Tallinn will have to be paid by the students (travel information can be found at: http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/eng).
