Copernicus Med-MFC
Marine Copernicus Mediterranean Monitoring Forecasting Center
The Mediterranean – Monitoring Forecasting Centre (Med-MFC) provides accurate, regular and systematic forecast, analysis and reanalysis for the physical state and the marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea. The systems are based on numerical models, which assimilate in situ and satellite observational data. The Mediterranean Sea is widely recognized as a hotspot for climate change due to its unique geography and sensitivity to environmental shifts. Over the past few decades, the region has experienced significant warming, acidification and human pressures affecting the marine ecosystem (e.g.threatening biodiversity and eutrophication), and exacerbating phenomena like marine heatwaves.
Monitoring and predicting ocean variability is crucial, thus the Med-MFC gathers expertise and knowledge on the regional Mediterranean Sea dynamics (from waves to currents) and biogeochemistry. Med-MFC also acts as bridge with local data collection networks and strenghtens technical collaborations with other Copernicus Marine Service components. Moreover, Med-MFC’s objectives include the planning and efficient implementation of systems upgrades, product quality assessment, and support to the production of the Ocean State Report (OSR) and Ocean Monitoring Indicators (OMIs).
OGS is responsable for the biogeochemical component of the Med-MFC.
