EMBRC UP
EMBRC Unlocking the Potential for Health and Food from the seas
The EMBRC-UP project is a national strategic implementation of the ERIC EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre) and aims to increase the research potential in the field of marine resources.
The proposed infrastructure follows the model of a distributed infrastructure and is unique in Italy. The equipment, sensors, instruments, digitalisation and data acquired through this project will improve Italian research in the field of exploration and sustainable use of marine resources, while strengthening collaboration and exchange within the Italian JRU (Joint Research Unit) to increase national competitiveness in these strategically important sectors, also in view of the European Partnership for a Sustainable Blue Economy, which Italy will coordinate.
The seas and oceans are our planet's greatest resource and are of fundamental importance for the sustainable development of a country with 8700 kilometres of coastline and around 15% of the surface area of the Mediterranean. However, their potential is still largely untapped.
The EMBRC-UP project is a national strategic implementation of the ERIC EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre) and aims to increase the research potential in the field of marine resources.
In order to develop the country's blue economy, we need close co-operation between research and industry to find intelligent solutions. On the one hand, we need to develop instruments for the sustainable utilisation of marine resources and, on the other, we can create new employment opportunities. Marine life offers a multitude of new opportunities in the form of food, food supplements and bioactive molecules, which are extremely important in the fields of pharmacology, biomaterials and bioremediation (the remediation of soils through biodegradation techniques). The development of new technologies and biotechnologies can unlock this untapped potential, which has a positive impact on various industries and the national economy.
OGS is a co-organiser of the project.
