NBFC
National Biodiversity Future Centre
The National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC) was established as part of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) to bring together national excellence in scientific research and modern technologies to support operational actions aimed at monitoring, conserving and restoring biodiversity in marine, terrestrial and urban ecosystems throughout Italy. In addition, biodiversity is to be strengthened and positioned as a central pillar of sustainable development.
The NBFC focuses on cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and innovation to monitor, conserve, restore and enhance biodiversity in Italy. The structure of the centre comprises 48 academic and industrial partners.
General objectives:
- To identify and understand the main factors causing biodiversity decline in marine, terrestrial and urban environments.
- Promote biodiversity as a key element of sustainable development.
The scientific activities (NBFC-SCIENCE) are supported by a common distributed laboratory infrastructure (NBFC-LAB), which includes specialised technologies to measure specific traits:
- a functional imaging technology laboratory
- a remote sensing and robotics laboratory for measurements and imaging in the field, from the air and underwater
- a laboratory for biology, biotechnologyand chemistry
- a simulation laboratory in which specific stress conditions for plants, marine and terrestrial animals and microorganisms can be analysed
- a wide network of Open Labs, including marine, terrestrial and urban sites, where activities are carried out thanks to the investments of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and other national or international long-term programmes and initiatives.
The main ESFRI stations and facilities available for NBFC activities include LIFEWATCH, ICOS, eLTER, ANAEE, EMPHASIS and DISSCO.
The role of the OGS in NBFC
The OGS is a founding member of the Hub and is associated with two speakers:
- Mapping and monitoring biodiversity conservation measures and the functioning of marine ecosystems.
- Solutions for reversing marine biodiversity loss and sustainable management of marine resources.
