The fifth edition of MareDireFare – Ocean Festival kicks off
The fifth edition of MareDireFare kicked off today, April 4, with the opening of the exhibition "A different kind of sea", set up in Sala Veruda in Trieste. The comic art exhibition about the sea will run until April 16, after which the Festival will continue its tour throughout the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
The sea we knew a few decades ago no longer exists: the effects of the climate crisis and the many human pressures we have placed on it—ranging from overfishing to pollution, from marine litter to the introduction of alien species we've helped spread—have radically changed it. Today, our seas and ocean are dirtier, more acidic, poorer, and warmer, with direct consequences for biodiversity, marine habitats, and the health of the entire ecosystem.
To tell this story, the MareDireFare festival returns once again this year. Launched in 2021 as an initiative of OGS and WWF Marine Protected Area of Miramare, the festival was created to celebrate the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), encouraging reflection on marine conservation and the future of ocean resources.
Co-organized with Comune di Trieste, Patto per la lettura, Scienza under 18 isontina, Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, Associazione Machéri, Associazione culturale Museo della Bora and Editoriale Scienza; in collaboration with Trieste città della conoscenza, Boramata and WWF YOUng, the Festival takes place thanks to the support of Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the media partnership of Rai Radio 3, RAI FVG, Lifegate and Pianeta Azzurro.
