Marine biodiversity: conclusion of the BIOSEA project activities
With the conference on July 22nd, the activities of the BIOSEA project, Tutela e salvaguardia della BIOdiversità e dei SErvizi ecosistemici degli Ambienti di transizione - a project funded by PO-FEAMP 2104/2020 and involving OGS and the University of Messina in the coastal lagoons of Capo Peloro and Oliveri-Tindari (Northeast Sicily) - were presented.
Davide Formica, geologist and expert on the Tindari Lakes area, Paolo Alibrandi, representing Pro Loco Capo Peloro, and Marina Morabito, associate professor at the University of Messina, also attended the event and presented the results.
BIOSEA, which began in September 2021, aimed to assess the health and conservation of two transitional areas on the northern coast of Sicily: Capo Peloro - Laghi di Ganzirri and the lagoon of Oliveri - Tindari. In particular, the researchers studied the diversity of fish species of commercial importance, the presence and distribution of non-native species introduced by human activities, paying special attention to the conservation of ecosystem services provided by these habitats. Another objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of the restrictions imposed by local management plans and their impact on the ecosystem in terms of biodiversity.
