Seismic risk assessment: a publication for all those involved in earthquake engineering, disaster prevention and infrastructure sustainability

We are pleased to share a recent review of the book "Earthquakes and Sustainable Infrastructure: Neodeterministic (NDSHA) Approach Guarantees Prevention Rather Than Cure", edited by Giuliano F. Panza, who we have the pleasure of having among our associates, together with Vladimir G. Kossobokov, Efraim Laor and Benedetto De Vivo.

The review, published in the journal Earthquake Science, highlights the fundamental role of the NDSHA approach, which has revolutionised seismic hazard assessment over the last 25 years by shifting the focus from probabilistic models to physics- based scenarios. This approach allows us to predict the effects of earthquakes with greater precision, offering tools to prevent and reduce unacceptable losses, rather than limiting our options to managing the consequences of disasters.

Aspects highlighted in the review include:

  • The book addresses a solid and interdisciplinary scientific method that integrates geophysics, engineering and geodesy;
  • develops practical applications in many regions of the world;
  • demonstrates the adaptability of NDSHA to critical infrastructure and cultural heritage, providing a valuable guide for designing resilient structures that can withstand future earthquakes.

Our colleagues Antonella Peresan and Andrea Magrin contributed with some chapters to the book edited by Prof Panza. Our colleagues Antonella Peresan and Andrea Magrin contributed with some chapters to the book edited by Prof. Panza with some chapters on the research activities carried out by the OGS in Italy and in the areas of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
