GeoSciences IR

The GeoSciences IR project aims to create a new research infrastructure for the Italian Network of Regional Geological Services (RISG), a coordination network between ISPRA, the Italian Geological Survey and the Regional Geological Services (RGS), the technical offices of the regions, autonomous provinces and regional environmental agencies with specific geological tasks at regional level.

GeoSciences will provide ISPRA and the RGS with the technical-scientific expertise they need to fulfil their tasks at national (ISPRA) and regional (RGS) level on specific geological topics identified as priorities by the RGS. This objective will be achieved through various knowledge transfer activities carried out by universities and research institutes recognised as scientific leaders in these priority areas.

Through a high-tech cloud infrastructure, GeoSciences will have access to a large amount of data, services and tools specifically developed by the project partners and made available to the target users to fulfil their institutional mission. To achieve this goal, the technological infrastructure will be built according to international standards for data, metadata and services (e.g. INSPIRE) and the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). Users will benefit from special software, cloud-based processing tools and e-learning modules designed to improve their technicaland scientific skills in the geological field.

GeoSciences will complement other ongoing initiatives to develop data and research infrastructures in the field of geosciences, both at European (e.g. EPOS, EGDI) and national level (e.g. Mirror Copernicus), which aim to establish links and identify areas of co-operation to better achieve their respective objectives.

The OGS is a co-proponent of the project.
