While storing pure hydrogen in salt caverns has been practiced since the 70s in Europe, pure hydrogen storage has not yet been carried out yet anywhere in depleted fields or aquifers. The EU Hystories Project will deliver technical developments applicable to a vast range of future aquifer or depleted field sites, will conduct techno-economic feasibility studies and provide insights into underground hydrogen storage for decision makers in government and industry. OGS, third party of CO2GeoNet, will identify and characterize geological formations potentially suitable for hydrogen storage in Italy, both onshore and offshore. The outcomes of these analyses will be part of a European, open access database of hydrogen sites identified in each country involved in the project.
