Profile
Former Professor of Seismology, Trieste University, Head of Group at Abdus Salam ICTP. Emeritus Honorary professor IGPCEA Beijing; Honorary professor Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA); Member of Lincei Academy; Member of XL academy; RAS and TWAS member. Beno Gutenberg medal by the European Union of Geosciences, Laurea honoris causa, from the University of Bucharest. AGU International Award 2018. 5th Class/Knight (Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana).
Multidisciplinary scientific activity: integrated analysis of structure and dynamics of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system; integrated approach to modelling seismic waves in near-field and far-field; identification of earthquake-prone areas and premonitory seismicity patterns. In cooperation with the Italian Space Agency, the simultaneous use of (a) neodeterministic (NDSHA) approach for ground motion estimation, (b) monitoring of the space-time variation of hazard and (c) the Earth observation data lead to the construction of time-dependent hazard models based on strong geophysical ground, that have generated particular interest at Civil Defense level. Recent studies have evidenced the relevant role of CO2 Earth mantle degassing in the exosphere.
Still in the NDSHA context, a recent review of the book "Earthquakes and Sustainable Infrastructure: Neodeterministic (NDSHA) Approach Guarantees Prevention Rather Than Cure", edited by Giuliano F. Panza, Vladimir G. Kossobokov, Efraim Laor and Benedetto De Vivo, published in Earthquake Science introduced the Panza-Rugarli law, as an important tool for seismic design in favor of safety.
