Graduated in mathematics from the University of Trieste, he worked at the OGS from 1972 to 2014, first as a seismologist, then as first researcher and from 1993 as a research director. He participated to the seismological expeditions in the Irpinia earthquake epicentral area (1980) and in the Sumbawa island (1981), and participated to the international project for the study of the Black Sea (1984-1987). He was expert in the Pegasos project (2001-2004) and PEGASOS Refinement Project (2008-2013), reviewer of the seismic hazard map of Italy (2003-2004) and coordinator for the seismological studies along the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (2012-2015). He was director of the seismological section (1982-1985) and of the Center for Seismological Research (1996-2000), president of the Earthquake Engineering subcommittee and member of the Executive Committee of the European Seismological Commission (1996-2002), director of the Italian Group for Solid Earth Geophysics (1998-2017), editor since 1997 of the Bulletin of Theoretical and Applied Geophysics (now Bulletin of Geophysics and Oceanography). He was responsible for over twenty national and European contracts. He has held courses and seminars at the universities of Trieste, Padua and Udine and was a lecturer at the IUSS in Pavia. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications and a reviewer for seismology and earthquake engineering journals.
